How AI technologies are improving forecasts in agriculture

Precision farming technologies have given farmers incredible insight like never before into the health and wellbeing of their farm. It’s estimated that by 2050, farming IoT platforms will be able to collect up to 4.1 million data points per day. When cross referenced, this data provides farmers with valuable insight into the health of their crops. It allows them to make quick decisions based on factual data.

However, the volume of data generated is too much for any one person to process by hand. To help sort through the data, farmers are turning to AI technologies to help analyze and maximize the data collected to improve crop yields.

Here are some examples of how AI technology is being used to help improve forecasting, and increase productivity on farms across the globe:

Agriculture drones and robotics

Drones are already being used by farmers to monitor crops for pests, disease, and overall plant health. Computer vision technologies combined with advanced AI algorithms are pushing robotics forward, positioning them as highly effective tools in agricultural forecasting.

HortiKey, a company out of the Netherlands, developing a robot called the Plantalyzer. This robot scans tomato plants measuring the size, ripeness, and quantity of the fruit. The robot has 6 cameras that work simultaneously, recording data that translates into detailed forecasts about both quality and volume of the entire tomato crop.

The volume of plants it can scan at once, make it the perfect tool for large-scale industrial greenhouses. In addition, the versatility of the technology will allow it to be customized to work with other types of vegetable plants.

Information gathered by robotics like drones, work together with other IoT agricultural tools to provide detailed maps of farmland. This data combined with AI technology, helps farmers take forecasting to the next level. AI allows factors like weather patterns, soil health, and water usage to all be compiled and analyzed. This gives farmers insight into details like what seeds are best to plant for the upcoming season, and how to best anticipate and maximize the quantity and quality of the harvest.


Using chatbots is a great way for farmers to gain quick and easy advice on a variety of topics. For instance best practices, pests and diseases, weather, and non-biased product recommendations are important and popular topics. We are living in a world where almost everyone has a smartphone. Thus, chatbots are simple way for farmers in remote locations to get fast and reliable answers to important questions.

The way forward

Precision farming and IoT technologies are providing an unprecedented amount of data to the farming community. Artificial intelligence tools harness that data into digestible and actionable information, resulting in improved forecasts and harvests across the board.
