Microsoft is discontinuing the German data trustee model
In the future, Microsoft will offer its Azure, Office 365 and Dynamics 365 cloud services only as part of its self-managed Microsoft cloud network. The locations of the new data centers are Berlin and Frankfurt. Azure is expected to be widely available in the fourth quarter of 2019. Office 365 will follow in the first quarter of 2020 and Dynamics 365 in the course of 2020.
With this change, the company will meet the changing customer requirements for more flexibility. According to Markus Nitschke, Director Microsoft Cloud Services Germany, Microsoft customers want more functionality and connectivity with the company’s global cloud infrastructure, which the sovereign Microsoft Cloud Germany with its special isolation does not allow.
So far the data centers are operated by the German Telekom as data trustee. With this approach, customers with strict compliance rules have been facilitated access to the cloud. Customer data is stored in a separate network from the Microsoft global infrastructure. Microsoft employees only have limited access to data centers in exceptional cases, such as technical issues.
Microsoft also offers high security and privacy standards in addition to the full functionality of its public cloud solutions for the new cloud regions. This is based on compliance certificates and the Microsoft Trusted Cloud Principles. In addition, certification according to the requirements catalog “Cloud Computing Compliance Controls Catalog” (C5) is planned. Since the new EU General Data Protection Regulation came into force this year, the company has included corresponding provisions in its contract.
